VAX-D Spinal Decompression

Vertebral Axial Decompression

VAX-D, short for Vertebral Axial Decompression, is a patented, non-surgical therapy for low back pain and sciatica. It has been shown in clinical studies to be an effective, conservative treatment for bulging, herniated, or degenerative discs, and facet syndrome. Even post-surgical patients and those suffering from certain types of stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal canal) have reported significant pain relief from VAX-D treatments. Over a series of relaxing treatment sessions, patients experience powerful pain reduction and healing. Some even notice an improvement in their symptoms after the first few treatments!

VAX-D-not to be confused with linear traction-lengthens and decompresses the spine. High

intradiscal pressures are reversed, achieving negative pressures via a patented slow ramp-up process. Negative pressure creates a vacuum inside the discs, which not only takes pressure off of pinched nerves, but helps to reposition bulging discs and pull extruded disc material back into place.

Spinal experts surmise that nutrients, oxygen, and fluids are drawn into the disc, stimulating the body's repair mechanism to provide the building blocks necessary to mend injured discs. VAX-D's process is the only patented treatment clinically proven to decrease disc pressures to the negative levels needed to facilitate healing!

The Miracle Wave® | Piezo

What is Miracle Wave?

Shock wave therapy (also known as ESWT) is a modern, non-invasive treatment that uses high-intensity sound waves (acoustic pulses) to help promote healing faster and more effectively - with no downtime. It is a therapy used worldwide in the field of sport's medicine and physical therapy.

Shock wave therapy transmits high peak acoustic pressure waves to promote and accelerate healing for chronic and subacute conditions. Research supports shock wave therapy as an effective treatment for various soft tissue injuries, musculoskeletal pain and mobility issues.

Biological benefits include:

  • Reduce pain faster
  • Improve range of motion
  • Increase blood flow and micro circulation
  • Stimulate tissue remodeling and neovascularization
  • Remodel fibrotic tissue and release trigger points
  • Reverse chronic inflammation
  • Increase nitric oxide (NO)
  • Activates stem cells and growth factors

How does it work?

Shock wave therapy utilizes advanced acoustic wave technology sending noninvasive high-peak pressure waves into injured tissue quickly alleviating pain while also kickstarting the angiogenesis process, accelerating tissue regeneration, and restoring mobility and function to affected areas. Shock wave therapy is known under many names such as acoustic pressure wave therapy (APWT), extracorporeal pulse activation therapy (EPAT), and acoustic wave therapy (AWT); however, the two main categorizes of shock wave therapy are categorized as radial and focused waves. Radial shock wave therapy is optimal for a wider variety of indications, whereas focused shock wave therapy offers a deeper penetration for targeted conditions.

Cellular Effects of K-Laser Therapy

During K-Laser Therapy the infrared laser light interacts with tissues at the cellular level and metabolic activity increases within the cell, improving the transport of nutrients across the cell membrane. This initiates the production of cellular energy (ATP) that leads to a cascade of beneficial effects, increasing cellular function and health.

K-Laser (Class IV)

Class IV K-Laser Therapy is a Pain Free application delivering infrared laser light to the affected tissue. This promotes increased circulation, decreased swelling, reduction of pain, and accelerated healing and tissue repair. Our doctors specialize in K-Laser Therapy; they find it very beneficial in treating of soft tissue Injuries, sprains, strains, repetitive strain injuries as well as back, elbow, arm and neck pains.

Laser Therapy, or “photobiomodulation”, is the use of specific wavelengths of light (red and near-infrared) to create therapeutic effects. These effects include improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling. Laser Therapy has been widely utilized in Europe by physical therapists, nurses and doctors as far back as the 1970’s. Now, after FDA clearance in 2002, Laser Therapy is being used extensively in the United States.

Back to Balance Wellness Center FAQs

  • At Back to Balance Wellness Center

VAX-D (Vertebral Axial Decompression) is a patented technology specifically for chronic low back pain and failed back surgeries. It is the only medical device that can provenly lower the pressure inside the spinal disc to "negative" levels, creating a vacuum effect.

  • Does the "pulling" sensation hurt?

Most patients find VAX-D very soothing. The machine is designed to move so slowly that it avoids the "guarding reflex" of your muscles. You will feel a firm, steady "stretching" in your low back, and many patients actually fall asleep during their 30-minute session.

  • Is this just a fancy version of traction?

This is a major point of confusion. Traditional traction can actually cause muscle spasms because the body "fights" the constant pull. VAX-D uses a patented logarithmic curve that "tricks" the muscles into staying relaxed, allowing the decompression to reach the actual disc, which traction cannot do.

  • Is it safe if I’ve already had back surgery?

In many cases, yes. VAX-D is often used for "Failed Back Surgery Syndrome." As long as you don't have certain types of hardware (like pedicle screws or fusion cages in specific areas), VAX-D can be a lifesaver for post-surgical pain. We always review your imaging (MRI/X-ray) first.

  • Does it really heal the disc?

By creating a "negative pressure" (vacuum) inside the disc, VAX-D helps draw in fluids, nutrients, and oxygen that the disc needs to repair itself. It also helps "suck" the herniated material back away from the nerve root. It is as close to "un-doing" a disc injury as technology allows.

  • Why do I need so many sessions (20+)?

Disc tissue is the slowest-healing tissue in the body. You didn't damage your disc in one day, and we can't heal it in one day. We need to create that "vacuum effect" repeatedly to pump enough nutrients into the disc to create a permanent structural change. Skipping sessions is like taking off your braces halfway through—the teeth (or discs) will just slide back.
