Discover Cox Flexion-Distraction Technique in Roswell

Cox Flexion-Distraction Technique

This is a gentle, non-force adjusting approach. The thing that most patients notice first is our special Hill Laboratories AirFlex tables. The movements of this table help to traction the spine, opening up compressed spinal discs and reducing pressure on facet joints of the spine. Named after its developer, Dr. James Cox, this highly-effective technique combines osteopathic principles with the specific, highly-directed approach used in chiropractic. The combination offers a conservative resolution of low back and leg pain that often averts the need for surgery.

The Cox Flexion-Distraction technique we use gives us the ability to place spinal joints in a more normal motion and position without pain or aggravating your condition. By lying on the table, neutralizing the effects of gravity, we're able to gently separate spinal joints and move them through a more normal range of motion. Patients find this surprisingly pleasant. We find it powerfully effective.

The Miracle Wave® | Piezo

What is Miracle Wave?

Shock wave therapy (also known as ESWT) is a modern, non-invasive treatment that uses high-intensity sound waves (acoustic pulses) to help promote healing faster and more effectively - with no downtime. It is a therapy used worldwide in the field of sport's medicine and physical therapy.

Shock wave therapy transmits high peak acoustic pressure waves to promote and accelerate healing for chronic and subacute conditions. Research supports shock wave therapy as an effective treatment for various soft tissue injuries, musculoskeletal pain and mobility issues.

Biological benefits include:

  • Reduce pain faster
  • Improve range of motion
  • Increase blood flow and micro circulation
  • Stimulate tissue remodeling and neovascularization
  • Remodel fibrotic tissue and release trigger points
  • Reverse chronic inflammation
  • Increase nitric oxide (NO)
  • Activates stem cells and growth factors

How does it work?

Shock wave therapy utilizes advanced acoustic wave technology sending noninvasive high-peak pressure waves into injured tissue quickly alleviating pain while also kickstarting the angiogenesis process, accelerating tissue regeneration, and restoring mobility and function to affected areas. Shock wave therapy is known under many names such as acoustic pressure wave therapy (APWT), extracorporeal pulse activation therapy (EPAT), and acoustic wave therapy (AWT); however, the two main categorizes of shock wave therapy are categorized as radial and focused waves. Radial shock wave therapy is optimal for a wider variety of indications, whereas focused shock wave therapy offers a deeper penetration for targeted conditions.

k laser, class 4

Cellular Effects of K-Laser Therapy

During K-Laser Therapy the infrared laser light interacts with tissues at the cellular level and metabolic activity increases within the cell, improving the transport of nutrients across the cell membrane. This initiates the production of cellular energy (ATP) that leads to a cascade of beneficial effects, increasing cellular function and health.

K-Laser (Class IV)

Class IV K-Laser Therapy is a Pain Free application delivering infrared laser light to the affected tissue. This promotes increased circulation, decreased swelling, reduction of pain, and accelerated healing and tissue repair. Our doctors specialize in K-Laser Therapy; they find it very beneficial in treating of soft tissue Injuries, sprains, strains, repetitive strain injuries as well as back, elbow, arm and neck pains.

Laser Therapy, or “photobiomodulation”, is the use of specific wavelengths of light (red and near-infrared) to create therapeutic effects. These effects include improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling. Laser Therapy has been widely utilized in Europe by physical therapists, nurses and doctors as far back as the 1970’s. Now, after FDA clearance in 2002, Laser Therapy is being used extensively in the United States.

Back to Balance Wellness Center FAQs

  • At Back to Balance Wellness Center

If you are suffering from a herniated disc, sciatica, or spinal stenosis, you may feel like surgery is your only option. Cox Flexion-Distraction is a gentle, specialized technique designed to decompress the spine and move the disc back into its proper place without force.

  • Does this technique involve heavy pressure?

Quite the opposite. This is one of the most gentle treatments we offer. You lie on a specialized table that moves in a slow, rhythmic motion. There is no high-velocity "thrusting" or cracking. It feels like a deep, relaxing stretch for your lower back.

  • Is this just a fancy version of traction?

While it involves decompression, it is much more localized than traditional traction. In standard traction, the whole spine is pulled. With Cox Flexion-Distraction, the doctor uses their hands to pinpoint the exact vertebrae that is causing the problem while the table provides the gentle distraction. It is "manual decompression" tailored specifically to your disc.

  • Is it safe for someone with a severe disc herniation?

Yes, it was specifically designed for "difficult" cases. Because there is no twisting or popping of the spine, it is often the preferred method for patients in acute pain or those with conditions like osteoporosis where a traditional adjustment might not be suitable.

  • Can this actually help me avoid surgery?

For many patients, yes. Research shows that Flexion-Distraction can drop the pressure inside the disc (intradiscal pressure) significantly, allowing the disc bulge to recede and taking pressure off the nerves. It is a highly effective "conservative" first step before considering more invasive options.

  • Why does it take multiple sessions to feel a change?

Discs have a very poor blood supply, which means they heal slowly. Think of this treatment like "braces for your spine." We are slowly remodeling the tissue and reducing inflammation. Consistency is key to keeping the pressure off the nerve long enough for the body to heal the disc tear.
